DPP to reconsider the aerial tramway permit
December 1, 2025
Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting notified the developer that the entire project must be reconsidered. A strong letter was sent on December 1, 2025 lists numerous concerns, allows a 15 day period to reply, and requires a public hearing on the permit application. The revocation process has begun.
Honolulu City Council unanimously approves resolution opposing the aerial tramway
November 5, 2025
Responding to universal opposition to the proposed aerial tramway, the Honolulu City Council unanimously passed Resolution 25-305, which calls on the Department of Planning and Permitting to deny the modification application and revoke the underlying permit for the projects. Hundreds of individuals submitted testimony in support of the resolution and the single piece of testimony in opposition came from the developer, who failed to attend the hearing.
Eight Neighborhood Board have formally opposed aerial tramway
October 20, 2025
Five more neighborhood boards held public discussions and passed resolutions in opposition to the aerial tramway project. Mililani Mauka-Launani Valley (#35), Wahiawa-Whitmore Village (#26), Nanakuli-Maili (#36), Waianae Coast (#24), Waimanalo (#32). Eight neighborhood boards have now passed resolutions without a single member voting in opposition to the resolutions.

Four neighborhood boards meet to discuss the proposed aerial tramway
July 30, 2025
The proposed aerial tramway project was the subject of a special joint meeting of four neighborhood boards at Leilehua High School on July 30, 2025. More than 100 people attended the meeting, and similar to the meeting held at Waialua High School on June 3, 2025, nobody spoke in favor of the project. The North Shore Neighborhood Board approved a resolution asking DPP to deny the pending permit application and revoke the 2019 approved permit. The Mililani-Waipio-Melemanu, Wahiawa-Whitmore Village and Mililani Mauka-Launani Valley Boards will discuss and likely approve similar resolutions at their next regular meetings.

First Public Meeting on Aerial Tramway draws 200 Residents

More than 200 residents filled the Waialua High School cafeteria to learn about the proposed aerial tramway up the side of Mt. Kaala. Nobody spoke in support of the project. Opposition is strong and growing now that the public is aware of the plan.
KHON2 Report on the gondola project

KHON reporter Nikki Schenfeld produced this news alert that Kaukonahua Ranch, LLC, dba Kamananui Agribusiness, had applied to modify its conditional use permit to build a gondola and zipline tourist attraction, and that the deadline for public comments was just two days away. The community quickly responded and submitted 128 pieces of testimony in strong opposition in just one day.
